Peter Segal has been signed to direct The Jetsons for Turner Pictures, production president Amy Pascal confirmed Monday. The Jetsons, a live-action film based on the Hanna-Barbera cartoon series owned by Turner, is written by Scott Alexander and Larry Karazewski (Ed Wood) and centers on a space-age family. The picture is scheduled to start filming in the early spring of 1997, with a release date in summer 1998. Denise Di Novi (Little Women) produces. It is expected to be the fourth picture that goes before the cameras for Turner. Other films that have gone into production include Edwards and Hunt: The First American Road Trip; the John Travolta starrer Michael; and The Fallen, which starts shooting in the fall with Denzel Washington starring and Greg Hoblit directing. Segal has directed such films as Tommy Boy and Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult. He recently completed My Fellow Americans for Warner Bros. He is also attached to direct Jonny Quest for Turner, another live-action version of an animated series in the Hanna-Barbera library. For television, he produced and directed The Jackie Thomas Show and Tom Arnold's The Naked Truth. Pete is a uniquely talented director, and we're very excited to be in business with him, said Pascal. 'The Jetsons' is one of the jewels of the Hanna-Barbera library. William Morris agents John Burnham and Carol Yumkas brokered Segal's deal. Matthew Tolmach is the executive on the project for Turner.
